The world would be a better place if your numbers were even higher. My head is exploding - I didn't realize I'd missed so many interesting subjects! I have a busy few days of reading ahead of me!!

I question everything and I want to understand the 'why' of things. I try to develop opinions that I can intelligently support and I'm constantly frustrated and angry by the dearth of critical thinking by the average person in my world. Your articles are both challenging reads and a breath of fresh air. Your thought-scapes are often so profoundly immense in scope compared to what I'm used to that they remind me how little control I have, how to approach my world with what minuscule control I may have and, if I still want to worry (which I do), how to worry more intelligently. Thank you for all of that!

I really enjoy 'dangerous ideas' and yours are amongst the best I have ever read. In particular, the articles regarding the end of nation states. It makes so much sense yet has incredible implications. Happy New Year and I look forward to more dangerous ideas in 2022.

On the eleventh day of Christmas my truelove gave to me eleven ladies dancing

Dancing in beautiful harmony.

Today I think I should talk about the UTers itself and draw attention to what is NOT in it.

Love, sex, emotion and women. My very rough count of the posts about articles suggests at least a 2:1 ratio of male to female, much higher on some topics. To be clear, this isn’t a criticism, just an observation. I think there are a number of reasons for it, but one of them is that the Uters is by design a forum for rational discussion. My point is simply that to build a realistic mental model of the world we live in and design systems that work, it’s important not to forget that humans are emotional creatures. Artificial intelligence may someday be good enough that we can completely disconnect rational thinking from emotion, but I think we should question whether that is always a good thing. Until then I think we need keep some sort of balance between the rational and the emotional.

Thanks for all your hard work, looking forward to what 2022 brings...

I had not noticed the ratio. Thanks for bringing it up to me!

I want to believe that your hypothesis of the connection between rationality and gender ratio has a low probability of being true. But I will pay attention to that and other hypotheses.

I agree that love and emotion are missing. I'm so focused on getting the analysis done that I have a hard time adding the emotional layer...

Analysis by its nature is rational and that is fine as far as it goes. We just need to incorporate emotion in creating a model of reality, otherwise any plan of action won't be realistic. Pretending something doesn't exist is not a good recipe for problem solving. This is one of the chief criticisms of economics and "rational man" theory.

Oops, I have now posted twice without using the word balance....

I was hoping some rational women would misunderstand my point, get annoyed by that comment and post so we would know that least they are out there and listening, but they were obviously too smart for me and didn't rise to the bait. To be clear, there are many potential reasons for the gender skew and I don't know the answer. Perhaps ask Victoria F.
